Professor Doyle Knight will present a Byrne Seminar during the exploring the economic, political, and social impact of the extraordinary growth of space exploration in the 21st century. In the previous century, space exploration was dominated by the U.S. and Soviet Union. But the past decade has witnessed unprecedented growth in both government and private space ventures, and space exploration is now a prominent activity in many nations.

Liping Liu has been selected to receive the 2015 Young Investigator Medal of the Society of Engineering Science (SES). SES Young Investigator Medal: The prize is in the form of a medal, the Society of Engineering Science Young Investigator Medal, and an award of $1000. The prize is awarded to a promising early-career researcher whose work has already had an impact in his/her field within the engineering sciences.

Together with his coauthors P. Sharma and P. Mohammadi, Liping Liu has been selected to receive the 2015 Melville Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his paper entitled "A Theory of Flexoelectric Membranes and Effective Properties of Heterogeneous Membranes".

Plenary speaker, Professor Norris presented "Acoustic Invisibilty and Causality" at the 12th International Conference on Mathematical and Numerical Aspects of Waves. Organized by the Department of Mathematics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany and with support from INRIA, a French national research institution focusing on computer science and applied mathematics; this conference series is one of the main venues where significant advances in the analysis and computational modeling of wave phenomena and exciting new applications are presented.

A research paper by MAE graduate students Mitja Trkov and Kuo Chen, as the first and second authors, respectively, was selected as the Best Student Paper Award at the 2015 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM) held in Busan, Korea, in July 2015. Professor Jingang Yi doctoral student Kuo Chen has received the 2014 ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Division (DSCD)’s Best Student Paper on Mechatronics for his work on An integrated physical-learning model of physical human-robot interactions: A bikebot riding example, which was presented last year at ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Conference (DSCC).
