An advanced research-oriented degree with the goal of entering academia or a research-focused industrial or government laboratory. The Ph.D. dissertation requires the creation of new, high-impact knowledge and understanding at the frontiers of engineering or science.  

Research is performed in-depth under the close mentorship of a faculty advisor.

Degree Requirements

Doctoral students are expected to complete at least 48 credits of coursework (beyond the bachelor's degree) and at least 24 credits of research work. In addition to coursework, Ph.D. students take a qualifying examination that consists of a written and sometimes an oral part, a successful defense of a dissertation.
