March 21, 2020

Dear ME and AE students,

I hope my email finds you well. We are about to end the spring break but I know that to most of us it doesn’t feel this way. We are following the developments nation- and world-wide and are trying to keep up with this “new” reality as it is changing every day.

Monday you are coming back to your virtual classes. All the MAE faculty and staff are working hard to ensure that you will have all your courses available to you online.  Please find below the steps we have taken to ensure the successful continuation of your studies.

On-line instruction

  1. We have set up a webpage where we have consolidated all the information you will need in order to go to your classes. The webpage will be live by the afternoon of Saturday, March 21st.https://mae.rutgers.edu/where-is-my-mae-class. In that webpage you will be able to find all the information about the virtual classrooms by course, office hours, professors’ contact info etc. You will have live links to take you directly to your classes.  On the left-hand frame is the online instructions that you need familiarize yourselves with. Please make every effort to try to login prior to the class time.
  2. Attendance is required for ALL MAE courses except if otherwise indicated by the instructor. As such, all the web tools we are using have the ability to capture participation.  Please make sure you are present.  The instructors will be taking snapshots of participation several times throughout the  synchronous sessions in order to ensure that you are there.
  3. All classes will be held at their original, regular times using online recourses as discussed above. In the case that there is an emergency and you miss a class, please fill out the “email request” for a recorded session.
  4. Rutgers has developed webpages with a lot of information about how to follow online instruction, writing workshops, mentoring etc. https://rlc.rutgers.edu/remote_instruction and  how to succeed in an online course https://rlc.rutgers.edu/succeedonline  We strongly encourage you to use them.
  5. The laboratory courses will also take place online.  The TAs will provide more information at your individual online sessions. Please make every effort to participate at the times as you would have on your regular lab sessions.  We have instructed the TAs not to allow any consolidation of the groups or alter the times.  This is happening for two reasons: 1) to keep the normalcy of our schedule, and 2) to allow participation as much as possible in the lab experience.
  6. Students who are doing Co-Ops or Internships and they are not able to complete their time at the companies: You will need to provide alternative plans for finishing up your internships.  Upon completion, you will need to follow normal procedure found in our handbook at https://mae.rutgers.edu/flipbook/ughandbook/mobile/ I will send out a form to you in order to capture this information and to further advise you on the process.  In the meantime, please device alternative plans to finish up your work in consultation with your company supervisor.

Seniors

  • We will communicate to you through SAKAI about the requirements for finishing up your senior projects.  We are making sure that you will be able to finish your requirements for graduation on time.
  • The forms for Energy and/or Aerospace certificates are online and we will be sending you pertinent information as we are getting closer to the graduation deadline.

Juniors

  • We will communicate to you through email for setting up virtual rooms with the  2020-2021 senior design project so you can make selections.  The projects will be posted on our website by April 20th.  General guidelines will be sent via email.

Sophomores

  • Familiarize yourselves with the MAE website and the MAE handbook.
  • Make sure you are talking to your academic advisors to plan for curriculum.

JJ Slade Scholars

Please contact your advisors for project completion. The Undergraduate Office has the alternative plans of project completion from your advisors and I will send individual emails to all of you by Friday, March 27.

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research (6650:299/399/499):  I have discussed with your advisors and have requested alternative plans to be made for your research projects. Please contact your advisors for alternative project completion (perhaps including a literature review or other means of scholarship for your ongoing research).

All undergraduates

  • I cannot stress enough how important it is to be professionals in your communications. Make sure that you are to the point and polite, make constructive criticism, and give credit when appropriate.
  • If for any reason, including internet connectivity issues, you miss a class we will make every effort so the class material will get to you.
  • Make sure you successfully finish your semester.

All of us have been working very hard the whole break to make sure that we can make your online experience as stress-free as possible. I am sure that there will be hiccups but as I said above be patient and professional.  These are times to show our best selves and rise above difficult circumstances and obstacles. I will communicate with you via email and office hours through WebEx.

Finally, in order to lift our spirits a bit, I am attaching a few comments and words of wisdom that your professors and teaching assistants have offered.

We are in it together!

Warm wishes,

Professor Pelegri

With or without a classroom, we must all do everything we can so that you learn the subjects in your program, and apply that knowledge correctly in your career. In this context, I trust that you will utilize the time away from the campus wisely, focus, and work harder during these difficult times. I wish you, your family and friends good health.

While we distance ourselves and keep our community safe, we'll manage to move forward and enjoy these upcoming fun online meetings. Let me say that facing difficulties is inevitable, but learning from them and turning it to positive experiences is the skill  ;))
