Mechanical and aerospace engineering sophomore Ariana Dyer's poster titled, “Transition of Virtual Research Group Modules to a Remote Teaching Environment,” has won the award for “Highest Impact to Under-represented/Minority Groups (Outreach to Underrepresented/Minority Groups)” at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Student Poster Competition at the 2020 Virtual IMECE meeting of the ASME. This research was conducted in Professor Singer's lab in collaboration with the New Jersey Governor's School of Engineering & Technology and was supported by an NSF award.

People who worry about the safety of self-driving cars might either be reassured or concerned by an approach that Jingang Yi, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, is proposing: add race car driving skills and techniques to the brains of autonomous vehicles. “Professional drivers perform extreme maneuvers to avoid crashes with other vehicles, or to avoid running off the road,” Yi said. “But typical drivers out on the streets and highways don’t know how to do them.”

Professor Xiaoli Bai has been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow for the Class of 2021 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Each year, only one for every 150 voting members are selected and approved. Only 17 percent of AIAA members are selected for the rank of Associate Fellow.  More details can be found here.

Prof. James Guo has been conferred an Honorary Professorship of Amity University in Noida, India, in recognition of his research achievements and leadership in the areas of enhanced heat transfer and radiative heat transfer. He received this distinction at the valedictory ceremony of the 2nd International Conference on Future Learning Aspects of Mechanical Engineering (FLAME - 2020), 5th – 7th August 2020. He has delivered a Plenary Lecture “Heat Transfer Enhancement with Nanofluids” in the conference.

Last spring as a group of mechanical and aerospace engineering students were putting the pieces in place for their senior design project, the team’s advisor and assistant professor in the department, Onur Bilgen, suggested they apply for a NASA University Student Research Challenge (USRC) grant. Bilgen felt confident their multi-mode hybrid drone delivery system (MMHDDS) project could be a strong contender, and he was right.

Professors Kimberly Cook-Chenault and Jonathan P. Singer were among the six faculty members from across Rutgers University who recently received coveted 2019-20 Provost’s Awards for Faculty Excellence. The Provost’s Awards honor outstanding faculty members at all stages of their careers whose exceptional work in innovative teaching, cross-disciplinary research, and STEM diversity has been recognized by their peers.   Prof. Singer received a Provost’s Award for Excellence in Innovative Teaching in recognition of his non-traditional approach to active learning.
