Elastomeric Actuators on Airfoils for Aerodynamic Control of Lift and Drag

Jingjin Xie and students working with Assistant Professor Mazzeo published an article that is the first to describe the dynamic control of both lift and drag on airfoils embedded with pneumatically-driven, soft and squishy actuators. This work has potential use for the manipulation of forces on elastomeric airfoils or fins with unmanned vehicles and energy harvesters. Please see a recent highlight on MaterialViews, a YouTube video, or a manuscript for more information.
